Hello, my role with Kiva is to loan the little money I have to help improve the quality of life of someone who is desperately making an effort to help themselves and better their community as a respectable merchant. I have been given so much and my intention is to give it all back to the less fortunate, regardless of my current situation.

My name is Phillip and I live in the small town of Boone, North Carolina, United States. On October of 1998, I was physically assaulted in the streets of Phoenix Arizona where I suffered a disabling condition. During the past four years I have attended a NC community college to achieve a better employment opportunity as a Diesel Truck Technician, which is how I made my living until my situation changed for the worst. My recent education is funded by state and federal programs as a work incentive, which may not be available in other countries.

A year ago, I began to study Business Administration where I was introduced to globalization as a current trend in business. Now I understand some of the slavery practices in less fortunate countries. It is sad for many companies such as Wal-Mart (a retail giant) to employ child labor for as little as 50¢ (USD) per hour when our minimum wage is ten times that amount.

Until a news story featured Kiva.org where a business owner described the process of making small loans to people in third world countries as a helping hand, I was totally unaware of this program where assistance may be offered for as little as 25.00 USD. This business owner reports that he will reinvest the money as the loan matures; he also reports there is some risk, but most loans are repaid in good faith.

I am still a full time college student where I plan to regain a productive lifestyle and make a difference in my community as a manager. A portion of my support is earned from making natural soap in my home and selling the products on my website sunflower-soap and through a store on eBay. My story is much like the ventures on Kiva where people are in need of a hand up toward a better lifestyle.

Download the Kiva Brochure and the Kiva Flyer for more information of how you can help people in third world countries to a better way of life.
