Handmade Sunflower Soap

A tradition in the mountains of western North Carolina is to make soap from animal fats. Our ancestors used this handmade soap for everything from cleansing your body to washing your laundry.

After the Great Depression, people had no money to spend on necessary things needed to survive. Town folk called them Hillbillies, who would take their handmade items and farm products to the General Store. The clerk bartered commodities from the entire community since jobs were scarce.

In modern times, the soap making process is much more scientific by balancing the PH value to prevent skin irritation, which our early predecessors knew very little about. All of the soap I make personally by selecting the best ingredients available to customize the characteristics of the finished bars.

One of my favorites soaps use Sunflower oil that produces a hard bar with explosive lather. Olive oil is one of the best oils used to enhance skin conditioning, and leaves a silky feeling. Goats milk is another excellent skin-conditioning additive, however it usually will turn brown during the transformation into soap.

Most of my soaps have a light fragrance intended to be relaxing using modern aromatherapy. I also make some soap unscented especially for people who are sensitive to perfumes and dyes. Essential oils have little effect on sensitive skin and the aroma produces a deep long lasting therapy.

I cut my bars of soap into a 2-ounce personal size, which I feel is more suitable to use as compared to the five-ounce size most people are selling today. I have plans to start making some in a 3 ½ - 4 ounce size if there are enough requests for a larger size.

All of the bars of soap I make require four weeks to cure before I will package them for sale. There is no way to make this soap overnight, it is very labor intensive and therefore I must charge an appropriate fee. All of the soap you purchase from the store is made using harsh chemicals, which dry out your skin requiring frequent applications of lotion.
